Laetacara curviceps is similar to Laetacara dorsigera and Laetacara araguaiae in general appearance, body shape and smaller size compared to other species of the genus. It differs from other species of the genus, except Laetacara dorsigera in that it has a spot on the dorsal fin above bar 5 of the body; and it differs from Laetacara dorsigera in that it has a less high head, a longer pelvic spine and does not have a reddish belly at the time of reproduction.
