The pike cichlids are a group of South American fish of the genus Crenicichla.

They inhabit the lakes, streams, rivers and freshwater holes of most Amazonian rivers.

These fish are ravenous predators and predominantly warm water fish.

Most pike cichlids have an elongated body and a broad, protuberant mouth. To feed themselves, they position themselves near branches of sunken trees, rocks and substrate, making a quick but lively chase to catch prey.

There are pike cichlids of various sizes. Dwarfs do not grow more than 10 cm. The medians reach a maximum size between 15 and 25 cm. And finally, there are the giants that surpass 60 cm. There is a pike cichlid for all aquarium lengths, but be careful when choosing the cohabitation partners of this fish, as they must be larger and of different genres. Most aggressions between pike cichlids are reserved for members of the same species. To inhabit them with larger genres, of different forms and colors, can reduce the aggressiveness. When all else fails, it's time for PVC. The addition of PVC pipe sections of sufficient width to comfortably fit the pike cichlids greatly reduces aggressiveness. There should always be more PVC pipes than pike cichlids. Fish of these species do not support the sight of their peers and need to be kept as far apart as possible.

More than 100 species of the genus Crenicichla have been described and there is still a lot of difficulty and disagreement among the scholars involving the identification of these species, which led to the creation of groups of species by KULLANDER, LUCENA and PLOEG. Currently, although the identity of a species is linked to its locality of collection, all species can be placed in their respective groups with only rudimentary knowledge of the characteristics of each group of species.
