CRENICICHLA WALLACII GROUP:

The species of Crenicichla wallacii group are usually small. The largest known specimen is 87 mm SL (C. cinderella) . Humeral blotch, suborbital blotch and a preorbital stripe are absent. An elliptical black blotch is presente just posterior to the orbit. A second elliptical black blotch is presente on the operculum. Both blotches are elongated in horizontal direction. Most species have a spinous or lobed dorsal edge of the supracleithrum.

The maxillae do not reach the level of the orbit. The lower jaw is nor or  slighdy prognathous. Five species, hitherto assigned to a separate genus Teleocichla by Kullander (1988), are assigned to this group, which now consists of 12 species. The synonymy of Teleocichia with Crenicichla is discussed.

Key to the species o the wallacii group Morphometric and meristic ranges are based on 95% confidence limits or averages and are not absolute valões.

The pike cichlids wild leaves (Crenicichla regani) are found in the Amazon in lakes or places of flooded forest with little current, hidden between branches and leaves.

In nature, these small predators feed on insects, larvae, aviums and small fish. In the aquarium, they eat ration and frozen for carnivores, but they love crushed shrimps and live foods.

This species of pike cichlid presents sexual dimorphism, where the females are smaller and contain in the dorsal fins one or more ocelli; since the males are bigger, their fins have no ocelli and are more pointed.

The pike cichlids wild leaves are very aggressive among themselves and with small or slow fish. It is advisable to keep only one couple per aquarium and add to them only larger fish.

During the breeding period, the couple becomes more colorful and aggressive, does the ritual of the court, puts eggs in a cavity of wood or stone that hatch after approximately 3 days.

The aquarium used by the couple of pike cichlids wild leaves must have more than a meter, own trunk, stones, floating plants or places that provide shelter, as these fish prefer to hide and do not like intense light
