The genus Heros differs from the other genus of the Heroini Kullander Tribe, 1998 (Perciformes, Cichlidae) in that it has a dark spot at the base of the last soft rays of the dorsal fin, commonly referred to as the "Tilapia spot". It also has the following characters: two supra-neural bones, reduced number of pleural vertebrae, only half centrum in the caudal peduncle, six to nine spines in the anal fin, and no spot in the caudal fin.

Identification Key of Heros notatus:

1'- Two series of scales between the upper and lower lateral lines ..... 2

2'- Anal fin with seven or more spines .................................................... 3

3'- Lanes two to six incomplete, not reaching the base of the dorsal fin; or missing ....................................................................................................... 4

4- Dark paints on scales giving a cross-linked pattern to the body; without concavity before the eyes .................................................. Heros notatus

Heros notatus differs from all other species by the presence of several series of dark spots on the body (vs. absence), and differs from Heros severus by having two series of scales between the lateral lines (vs. three series).

The species Heros notatus has a tall body, laterally compressed, more pronounced in the ventral region. Upper lip thin. Convex dorsal profile of the eye region to approximately the last spine of the dorsal fin; descending from the first soft ray to the end of the dorsal fin; short, strongly compressed caudal peduncle, higher than long. Lower lip thicker than upper lip; no folds. Convex ventral profile to caudal peduncle. Smooth operculum, preopercle, cleiter, supra-cleiter, post-temporal.
