Identification Key of  Laikkutonkija - Geophagus proximus

Geophagus proximus – Teles Pires

The name of this species is curious, since the Latin proximus means close. This is similar to many other species that were already known when the species was discovered and described scientifically.

It can be distinguished from other species by the preopercular mark, because it has no vertical bars on the body, even when stressed, and has a large lateral spot, which distinguishes it from Geophagus brachybranchus.

It is usually around 25 cm, although there are differences between some populations.
