The Hyphessobrycon genus, with more than 120 species, is the genus of the Characidae family with the largest number of nominal species that are distributed from southern Mexico to the La Plata River in Argentina.

The Hyphessobrycon genus differs from other characids by combining the following characters: presence of incomplete lateral line, caudal fin without scales, presence of adipose fin and two series of pre-maxillary teeth (internal series with five or more teeth).Chave artificial de identificação de espécies de Hyphessobrycon vilmae:
